Ellen DeGeneres Addresses Toxic Workplace Scandal on First Show Back
bySeptember 22, 2020
The Ellen DeGeneres Show is back on air, but due to the pandemic, there isn't an audience. The show will be virtual for a while.
At the moment, screens have been placed in the area where her live audience sat to make it look like it's a live recording. That said she needed to explain a few things. Remember the last time she was making headlines, about a month ago, was after accusations of having a very toxic environment from verbal, sexual abuse to racism.
According to Ellen, she was not aware, and after that information got to her in a very public way, she promised investigations would be done, and changes will be made. Now that the show is back, she started it off with a lengthy apology that addressed reports and accusations that she is a boss who leads a very toxic workplace.
"Things happen here that never should have happened. If you're watching because you love me, thank you. And if you're watching it because you don't love me, welcome. As you may have heard this summer, there were allegations of a toxic work environment at our show. And then there was an investigation. I learned that things happen here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously. And I want to say, I am so sorry to the people who were affected. I know that I'm in a position of privilege and power. And I realized that with that comes responsibility, and I take responsibility for what happens at my show."
She went on and added;
The truth is, I am that person that you see on TV. I am also a lot of other things. Sometimes I get sad, and I get mad, I get anxious, I get frustrated, I get impatient. And I am working on all of that. I am a work in progress."
Ellen then said that she could not have fooled her viewers for over 17 years;
"So, I'm a pretty good actress, but I don't think that I'm that good that I could come out here every day for 17 years and fool you. This is me. And my intention is to always be the best person I can be. And if I've ever let someone down, if I've ever hurt their feelings, I am so sorry for that."
So hopefully, from the allegations, things will change for the best. It saddened Ellen that her name is all over the show and people behind the scenes are tarnishing it.
DeGeneres closed by thanking her employees ;
"All I want is for every single one of them to be happy and to be proud to work here ,My hope is that we can still be a place of happiness and joy. I still want to be the one hour a day that people can go to escape and laugh. I want to continue to help all the people that we help every day. And I'm committed to making this the best season that we have ever had."
